The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel are awash with dining options, especially seafood. Boca Grande littleneck clams or grilled conch (pronounced konk) are favorites. Grouper, a Gulf coast specialty, comes fried, blackened, broiled or char grilled, often as sandwiches with fries or cole slaw. Rock shrimp, also from Gulf waters, is prepared like pink shrimp but in less time. Scallops from the Gulf can be breaded or fried, although area restaurants tend toward grilled or sautéed. For beef lovers, steak houses (both American and Japanese-style) and burger joints are plentiful as are Italian places and ethnic outposts including Asian. Most Fort Myers area restaurants are family-friendly, so there’s no need to fear being reduced to ordering takeout. Fort Myers’ RJ Gators, a Florida original serving outrageous wings, burgers and specialty sandwiches, promotes an exceptional kid’s meal value on Wednesdays, where youngsters are weighed and then charged a penny a pound for meals.
